Prevent
What is Prevent in the UK? Prevent is a government led programme which aims to safeguard vulnerable people from being drawn into terrorism. There is a multi-agency approach, with police working alongside statutory partners and communities to support those at risk from all forms of extremism.

Working with other organisations, the police protect vulnerable people from being exploited by extremists through a Home Office programme called Prevent.
The role of our Prevent Officers is to help people vulnerable to radicalisation move away from extremism. It can be hard to know what to do if you’re worried someone close is expressing extreme views or hatred, which could lead to them harming themselves or others. We’re here to listen and offer help and advice.
Working with partners, our Prevent officers have helped many people to move away from extremism and find a new direction by putting the right package of support in place, which could be from a doctor, through a school, or with a local community group or mentor.
We work with a range of partners including:
local authorities
schools and colleges
faith leaders
community groups, including women’s groups and youth groups
voluntary services
health practitioners

National Resources
The government training courses are designed, and are appropriate for, staff working in sectors covered by the Prevent duty. These include education, health, local authorities, police, prisons, probation and youth justice. Other sectors that are not covered may also complete this training. You do not have to complete all the courses. You should refer to your organisation's training requirements to determine which courses are appropriate for you.
These resources are designed to raise awareness of the Extreme Right Wing and are helpful for making those in schools aware of certain phrases, language, incidents, and behaviours, to be watchful of:
- Xtreme Right Wing signs & symbols
- Keywords document to assist with identifying potential concerns &/or for filtering & monitoring (this covers Islamist as well Right Wing)
- S-IT's – Self Initiated Terrorism, replaces the term we have come to understand of someone acting as a 'lone wolf' – resources which use the recent Dover attack as an example
